In Memoriam

Martin Nuh Hanan

February 8, 2003 – July 11, 2026

Martin’s motto was: “Jangan menyerah!” PERSEVERE!

I met Martin through his father back when Martin was a care-free high schooler and avid swimmer. Over the years, I watched him grow into a responsible, caring, and ambitious young man.

Since 2023, with the help of my close friend Jenny Kerr, a licensed English language teacher, I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of supporting Martin as he worked diligently toward mastering the English language, while also staying true to Indonesian, his native tongue. Most recently, Martin began to study for the TOEFL and IELTS exams and had successfully passed several pre-tests.

He contributed to Dalang’s mission of bringing Indonesian literature to readers by managing the bookstore, Baca Sastra; and stored our books in his room when we had nowhere else to keep them.

After graduating from Universitas Muhammadiyah in Purworejo, Martin struggled to secure a job matching his computer science degree. True to his motto, he never gave up. Martin proudly accepted a position at a school for children with disabilities where he helped teach important life skills, from swimming to daily self-care. He approached every challenge, from learning a new language to pivoting himself into a new career with determination and heart.

Martin lost his life in a traffic accident, leaving behind many who loved him deeply.

He is survived by his father, author Junaedi Setyono, his mother Sri Wahyuni, and younger sister, Maryam Mufidah.

A father’s farewell ….

Temon, a meeting with M

I truly love you my child

However, I believe God loves you even more

And since you have done all the chores

Life placed on your shoulders

I will let you go with a single greeting:

Be well, my child.
